What Is Not Covered By Standard Home Insurance

As a responsible homeowner, you know how important it is to have home insurance that protects your property and personal belongings. However, you should also know that standard home insurance does not cover everything, and there are some limits.

What Is Not Covered By Home Insurance?

Here are the things that standard home insurance usually does not cover:

  • Floods and earthquakes. If you live in a flood- or earthquake-prone area and you want to protect your property, you will have to purchase separate policies for that because standard home insurance does not cover damage caused by earthquakes and floods.
  • Regular wear and tear. The older your home is, the more repairs it needs. Unfortunately, home insurance will not cover things related to regular wear and tear, such as worn roofs, cracked window seals, and rotten boards.
  • Expensive jewelry and other highly valuable belongings. Like any other type of insurance, home insurance has certain limits and does not cover things over a certain amount. It covers your personal belongings, but expensive stuff may require additional coverage.
  • Insects or rodent damage. If rodents or insects, including termites, invade and damage your house, insurance will not cover repairs.
  • Fallen or dead trees on your property. Standard home insurance does not cover removing fallen or dead trees in your backyard. There are some policies though that will pay for tree removal if they have fallen due to a storm or damaged your house.
